SGA President's Corner

Posted February 4, 2022

Last week, I had the privilege of joining students and faculty for Healthy Café. It was an insightful, inspiring, and powerful session on our physical and emotional health and well-being. I was moved by the group's discussion on how our feelings motivated or inspired us to change during the pandemic. As we spoke, I saw how many students have been challenged by the pandemic emotionally and mentally in remarkably similar ways. Individually, some became angry, some were fearful, and some experienced profound grief. However, the pandemic forced us to look at ourselves intrinsically, as well as our purpose in life. In addition, it inspired many of us to return to higher education. Enrolling in college was a first-time experience for some, and it was after decades of being out of school for ot ... MORE

Student Mental Health Faculty Fellow

Posted February 4, 2022

As a long-time mentor and clinical social worker, I am excited to be serving as Student Mental Faculty Fellow for the Spring 2022 term. In this role, I will be working with Student Success to raise awareness about the need to support students who are struggling with mental health challenges and provide training and workshops on mental health and well-being to members of the college community. My hope is that by starting conversations about these issues, we can begin to develop a college culture of well-being—one that does not stigmatize mental health struggles and encourages each of us to reach out for help when we need it. ... Posted February 4, 2022

The mass exodus of people from Afghanistan that followed the U.S. pullout and Taliban takeover in August 2021 has rekindled public awareness of refugeeism worldwide. In this deliberative conversation, we discuss the Afghan and other refugee situations along with the challenges of resettlement, issues of family separation, and the lingering multi-generational trauma that impacts those who have experienced or been touched by such upheavals. A panel of academic and community experts will offer perspectives on historic patterns, social and political issues, and religious and cultural concerns. At the heart lie basic questions: What is home? What does it mean to leave a home? What does it mean to find a new home? And how does one welcome others into their home?
