Frederick Lothrop Jr., ’13
Electrician Student and Alum
I graduated from SUNY Empire State College in the spring of 2013. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in community and human Services with an emphasis on mental health/substance abuse counseling. I live in Watertown, NY.
The reason I am commenting is to recognize my mentor, Frances Mercer, who I feel is responsible for my graduating from SUNY Empire. She coaxed me to question why the system functions as it does. She scrutinized my essays, and, as an adult learner, gave me the privilege of editing my works prior to a final grade. Dr. Mercer was an excellent mentor. She has since retired from teaching; however, I will never forget her insight into the functioning of the human services system in this country and how it is funded. I feel that I received a well-rounded education in this field because of her excellent teaching methods and her knowledge of the subject matter. I am very grateful to her.
