Summary of Campus Climate Assessment Responses

Consistent with New York State Education Law 129-B and policies of The State University of New York, SUNY Empire State College participated in the 2021 University-wide Biennial SUNY Uniform Campus Climate Survey. The survey gathered information about student and employee experience with sexual and interpersonal violence and knowledge of policies and resources.

A total of 799 students and 425 employees completed the survey, for response rates of 8.6% and 32.3%, respectively.

In the survey 10.4% of students reported that they were subject to unwanted sexual comments, sexual slurs, or demeaning jokes during the last year, and 8.5% reported that they were subject to unwanted sexually suggestive digital or written communications. Three percent of students reported that they were subject to attempted sexual assault and 1.3% reported that they were subject to sexual assault.

About sixty-seven percent of students indicated familiarity with SUNY’s definition of affirmative consent, 25.4% knew how to contact the Title IX Coordinator, 25.2% indicated that they have received information on how to report a sexual assault, and 22.2% reported that they have received information on where to go to get help if someone they know or themselves were sexually assaulted.

Upon a full analysis of the data collected, results will be shared with the campus including, but not limited to, the overall and specific findings of the surveys.

SUNY Empire State College, working with SUNY and community colleagues (including students, faculty, and staff), will use these data to improve response to violence, develop prevention programs, and will continue to study the issue. More information about the survey is available here.
