Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
By Joshua Boardman
Every November, the United States recognizes homelessness and food insecurity week from November 13 to 21. This week brings awareness to the more than half a million people who are experiencing homelessness every night (Housing and Urban Development 2017 Point in Time Study) and the 5.1 million people annually who have had to reduce their families or their meals due to lack of resources (United States Department of Agriculture).
SUNY Empire recognizes the struggles that many of our students have while educating themselves for future careers or promotions. In a 2019 #realcollege survey conducted by the Hope Center, SUNY Empire students provided evidence that SUNY Empire State College Students were drastically affected by hunger and homelessness. The report highlighted the following statistics about our students.
- 30% of respondents experienced food insecurity in the prior 30 days
- 50% of respondents experienced housing insecurity in the previous year
- 10% of respondents experienced homelessness during the last year
SUNY Empire has created a few paths for students to find assistance in the times when they need it most. Organizations within your community will typically aid with eviction assistance and provide free food options for you and your family. It’s important to note it’s better to be proactive than reactive in these situations. Here are some ways to start the conversation:
- Reach out to the basic needs coordinator to discuss what opportunities or benefits you may qualify for to address your housing or food issues. You can self-refer by emailing basicneeds@esc.edu
- Visit the SUNY Empire State College Health and Wellness website to find resources for food, mental health, and other needs.
- Call your local city, town, or county housing authority or social services department for the best housing and food insecurity resources in your community.
On November 17, from 6to 8 p.m., the SUNY Empire community will host a deliberative discussion on food insecurity. We will email more information later this month.
