Required Courses
The four core courses focus on content areas essential for all healthcare-management professionals. A required elective allows you to customize your certificate to meet your specific needs or interests.
Crisis Intervention I: Theory and Practice (HUSV 2020)
This study surveys the major theories, evidence-based practices, concepts of crisis intervention assessment and intervention. Students will demonstrate crisis intervention skills and illustrate ethical, legal, and cultural considerations.
Crisis Intervention II: Skills and Models (HUSV 3001)
This study builds on the knowledge gained from Crisis Intervention I and examines how people respond to crises, as well as the evidence-based practices currently used in the field.
Students will analyze interventions including time-limited cognitive behavior therapy, eye movement and desensitization reprocessing, and client-centered, long-term treatment action plans and referral systems. Students will compare methods, models, and interventions and relate them to cases, including working with vulnerable and diverse populations during crisis.
Bereavement Counseling (HUSV-4005)
This course provides students with an overview of intervention strategies for a variety of loss scenarios with diverse populations. Other topics may include evaluating and strategizing interventions for loss across a lifecycle; intervention strategies for special populations; and approaches to support sudden loss and crisis situations.
Secondary Trauma in Human Service Workers (HUSV-4045)
Students will explore theory related to conflict, mediation, and negotiation, as well as approaches useful for one-on-one and organizational settings. Students will research an area of interest related to a resolution process.
One program elective chosen from the following:
- Disaster Mental Health (HUSV-3142): This course focuses on the psychological and physiological impacts disasters and major crises have on individuals, families, emergency workers, and communities. Students will explore post-traumatic stress, disaster-related anxiety and depression, signs and symptoms of mental-health distress, and interventions. In addition, students will examine the effectiveness of disaster mental-health programs and services designed to prevent or mitigate mental-health problems.
- Conflict in Human Services (HUSV-3122): Students will learn specific approaches useful for one-on-one situations and strategies for managing conflict in organizational settings. Students will research an area of interest (e.g. transformative mediation) related to a resolution process.
- Supporting Active Military, Veterans, and Their Families (HUSV-3065): Students will develop an understanding of the challenges facing active-duty military, veterans, and their families and the ability to provide support to this unique population.
