Building Resiliency in Academics
By April Simmons, Academic Service Specialist
Understanding your Options
We are often faced with unexpected circumstances, challenges and moments of crisis before we are prepared to deal with them. We understand that these challenges throughout life can often become a barrier to academic success, as feelings of stress, and uncertainty sometimes make the ability to continue studies feel impossible.
As an adult learner, the reality is that things will happen. Unexpected crisis will arise, work-life balance can become overwhelming, and significant amounts of stress from other factors in life can take a toll on completing assignments and meeting academic deadlines. Our office of Student Academic Services wants you to feel prepared and knowledgeable about the options that are available to you in moments like this. We work with students every day in providing specific processes, resources and guidance to help students achieve after experiencing barriers and setbacks. The key to remember is that there are always options available to you and your ability to move forward with resilience is the true bridge between set back and success. Below are some ways that our office provides support to students during times of need.
G.P.A./Academic Probation
Our office can help with all concerns related to your Grade Point Average (G.P.A.) and helping you to understand the implications of your grades. We also encourage you to utilize the G.P.A. calculator on the college website. It is an excellent tool for helping students estimate their cumulative and term G.P.A., in addition to determining what grades are needed to raise your G.P.A. to a particular level. Here is a link to the G.P.A. calculator: https://www.esc.edu/registrar/forms-services/gpa-calculator/
Academic Dismissal/Reinstatement Process
Our office assists students that have been dismissed from the college due to varying factors in their lives. We provide reinstatement instructions and help you to understand what is expected to undergo the process of reinstatement. Many students that have been dismissed due to barriers that were once present in their lives have been reinstated and are living successful lives. The key is not being stuck in your circumstance but relying on the tools that are available to navigate through.
Seek Assistance when Needed
Taking a look at the recent Covid-19 pandemic that is among us, it is apparent to see that sometimes crisis is inevitable, but resiliency helps us to rely on resources to help us cope, navigate and overcome. In fact, the American Psychological Association (2020) mentions that seeking assistance when you need it is a key aspect toward building resiliency.
We want to help.
We want you to understand your options. If there is ever a time that you are in need, please contact us at AcademicServices@esc.edu or 646-230-1278. We are happy to assist.
