Office of the President

Dean of the School for Graduate Studies Nathan Gonyea, Ph.D., was named officer in charge at SUNY Empire State College by SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras as of December 7, 2020.

As officer-in-charge, Gonyea leads the college’s interim leadership team while the College Council conducts a search for a new president following the appointment of former officer in charge Beth Berlin to chief operating officer of the SUNY System Administration in December 2020, and former president Jim Malatras to SUNY Chancellor in August 2020.

Gonyea brings extensive experience in higher education curriculum development and planning. Gonyea served as dean/interim dean of the School for Graduate Studies for four years, and as associate dean of Graduate Studies prior to that. While in his role as dean, he oversaw the launch of SUNY Empire’s Center for Autism Inclusivity to make SUNY Empire a fully autism-supportive college and to meet the growing demand for professionals working with children and adults with autism spectrum disorders. He also co-founded the Women’s Corporate Leadership Academy, which provides programing to support women and underrepresented individuals’ advancement into corporate board and other leadership positions. As dean, Gonyea oversaw significant growth in both the schools’ programs and enrollments. Before coming to SUNY Empire, he was a tenured associate professor at SUNY Oneonta, where he was recognized with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Gonyea and senior administrators at SUNY Empire provide leadership, coordination, and support as the college fulfills its critical mission of delivering flexible, individualized, high-quality education for students at any stage or life or learning.
