SUNY Empire Opens Voting on First-Ever Mascot
Voters Can Choose between Three Mascots Created by SUNY Empire Community Members
(SARATOGA SPRINGS, New York – Dec. 23, 2019) Voting is now open to choose the first-ever mascot of SUNY Empire State College. The three finalists were chosen from among 180 submissions from SUNY Empire students, faculty, staff, and alumni to create the college’s official mascot.
In its nearly 50-year history, SUNY Empire has never had such a symbol, recognizable across all its more than 30 locations in New York State and abroad. Once chosen, the final mascot will be ready to compete in SUNY’s 2020 Mascot Madness competition.
“SUNY Empire is fortunate to have incredible student, faculty and staff ambassadors throughout New York, across the country, and around the globe,” said SUNY Empire President Jim Malatras. “Despite geography, we all share the same values and goals. The new mascot will be another visual element for our community, and it’s up to everyone out there to vote on what feel best represents SUNY Empire.”
Mascot concept submissions were accepted from all corners of the SUNY Empire community this past fall. They were evaluated by a committee representing faculty, staff, students, and alumni on how well they represent the values of SUNY Empire, originality, and strength of a written rationale, to arrive at three final concepts.
The winner of the popular vote will be announced after voting has closed. Working in consultation with the winning entrant, the college will design the final mascot for unveiling at its All College Conference 2020 and participation in SUNY Mascot Madness.
Voting is now underway through January 14, 2020.
