Member of Assembly Charles Barron Meets with Student/Alumni Club The Black Male Initiative
New York State Assembly Member Charles Barron, (D-60), recently came to SUNY Empire State College’s Brooklyn location at the invitation of the college’s student alumni club, The Black Male Initiative.
The event, “The Conditions of Our Community,” took place Wednesday evening, April 19.
Nearly 50 students, alumni, faculty and staff participated.
“It was absolutely amazing,” said David Fullard, faculty advisor to BMI. “He spent nearly three hours with us and said he would like to come back to continue the conversation.”
As part of his narrative about the condition of the community he represents, Barron invited the audience to tour the 130-unit Eldert Lane residential complex, an affordable housing development, where a family of four earning no more than $35,000 would qualify to live.
Barron was elected to the state Assembly’s 60th district, which comprises East New York, Brooklyn, in 2014.
He chairs the Assembly subcommittee on community integration and serves on the aging, economic development, energy, housing, small business, social services and the job creation, commerce and industry committees.
He previously served on the New York City Council for 12 years, where he chaired the higher education committee and represented Brooklyn’s 42nd District.
