Statewide Events Honor Veterans and Veterans Day

‌The SUNY Empire State College community will be participating in events honoring veterans throughout October and November.

The college supports veterans, active-duty members of the military, their spouses and dependents through:

Military Times magazine has recognized the college among its “Best for Vets: Colleges” and “Best for Vets: Business Schools” each year since these prestigious rankings were first established.

2015 Statewide Events Honoring Veterans

Sprint for Soldiers 5 and 10K

The college is a sponsor of Sprint for Soldiers 5 and 10K, which takes place at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 1, Hudson Crossing Park, Schuylerville, N.Y.

The event benefits the Wounded Warrior Project, a comprehensive rehabilitative effort to assist soldiers transitioning to civilian life.

SUNY Empire State College Fort Drum Location, 25th Anniversary Celebration

The college celebrates 25 years educating students at Fort Drum, from 3-5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 21, Fort Drum, N.Y.

The event takes place together with the 30th anniversary of the SUNY North Country Consortium, an organization of seven colleges, including SUNY Empire, that works collaboratively to offer degrees in a variety of areas at the associate, bachelor’s and master’s levels.

American Revolutionary War Era “Residency”

This two-day academic experience, or residency, includes a one-day field trip to Saratoga National Historical Park, with other activities taking place at various times and locations in Saratoga County, Friday-Saturday, Oct. 23-24.

The number of opportunities available to members of the general public are limited. Those interested in participating are encouraged to inquire at their earliest convenience.

New York State Division of Veterans’ Affairs Community Conversations

The college will host one in a series of state Division of Veterans’ Affairs community conversations about legislation and issues impacting veterans. The event takes place from 1-3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28, at its Manhattan location, 325 Hudson Street, N.Y.

Trivia Night with the Friends of the New York State Military Museum

Again for 2015, the college’s Office of Veteran and Military Education will be fielding a team for the annual Trivia Night with the Friends of the New York State Military Museum.

Last year, the college’s team placed third and looks to improve on that performance.

Proceeds from this event helps the museum to setup new exhibits at the museum and hold presentations and book signings.

This event takes place from 5:30-9:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 6, at the New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center, 61 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Giving Thanks to the Veterans’ Services Providers in Our Community

The college is a co-sponsor of Giving Thanks to the Veterans’ Services Providers in Our Community. The event takes place from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 5, the Strathallan Hotel, 550 East Ave., Rochester, N.Y.

The event provides the opportunity meet and give thanks to veterans, community organizations and local business that provide services to veterans.

Central New York Veterans Parade and Expo

The college is a sponsor of the 8th annual Central New York Veterans Parade and Expo. The event continues its tradition of public expressions of gratitude and support for soldiers and veterans of every generation and conflict.

The parade and events take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, New York State Fairgrounds, Syracuse, N.Y.

Saratoga County Revolutionary Run for Veterans 5K

The Saratoga County Revolutionary Run for Veterans is sponsored in part by the college. The race takes place at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, Fort Hardy Park, Schuylerville, N.Y.

Proceeds benefit the Saratoga County Veterans Trust Fund, which was established to assist veterans with training, education, health care, housing and essential services.

America’s Parade in New York City

The college community is participating in America’s Parade in New York City. The parade begins at 11:15 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11. The assembly point is adjacent to the intersection of 5th Ave. and 24rd Street, Manhattan.

AJAX IN AMERICA

“AJAX IN AMERICA,” a dramatic reading  of Sophocles’ timeless dramas depicting the psychological and physical wounds of war, will be performed by area veterans, including the college’s Ryan Smithson ’12, author of “Ghosts of War: The True Story of a 19-Year-Old GI” and a 2015 recipient of the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.

The college is a sponsor of the performance, which begins at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12, and takes place at Gannett Auditorium, Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
