SUNY Empire State College Librarians

Sara Hull

Librarian and Coordinator for Collaborative Projects, Reference & Outreach

A little about myself: I began working at Empire State College in May 2007, and am now responsible for managing all aspects of our library's reference services--from coordinating the Ask a Librarian and Ask Us 24/7 coverage schedules and answers to frequently asked questions to statistics and system maintenance. I also coordinate librarian presence at college events such as residencies, open houses, orientations, and college conferences. I serve on the planning committee for the Institute on Mentoring, Teaching & Learning to promote faculty and staff development in these areas. Additionally, I act as a liaison for the library in collaboration with other departments across the college to develop and implement collegewide initiatives and system integrations.

Liaison responsibilities: humanities and the arts; social and behavioral sciences

Degrees: B.A. in English, minor in education, and theatre certificate, Siena College; M.S. in information science, M.A. in English, and M.A. in women’s studies, SUNY Albany

Dana Longley

Librarian and Assistant Director for Library Instruction & Information Literacy

A little about myself: I have worked at Empire State College since May 2003. I coordinate library instruction and information literacy services, among other things. I have been an avid follower, user and experimenter of emerging technologies and social media for libraries for several years. I have experience working in both large and small academic libraries and a large, urban public library. I truly love helping people find the information they need when they need it so never hesitate to send us your questions!

Liaison responsibilities: human services; nursing and allied health; and graduate studies

Degrees: B.A. in history, SUNY Geneseo; M.L.S., University of Pittsburgh

Sarah Morehouse

Librarian and Assistant Director for Instructional Support and Collection Management

A little about myself: I've worked in the online library since October 2006. I’m the copyright specialist and can help with determining whether and how external materials can be used legally in educational materials. I also provide copyright training to faculty and staff. Related to that, I am an OER specialist and can help developers find, evaluate, adopt and adapt Open Educational Resources that meet high andragogical standards and serve their learning objectives and the needs of their students while complying with copyright, accessibility, and technical requirements. I work with the designers, academic support, accessibility services, and the educational technologists to help faculty developers create excellent courses and learning materials in all modalities. And while selecting library materials is a collaborative effort, I run the technical and administrative back end of our collection development activities.

Liaison responsibilities: business

Degrees: B.A. in history, minor in English composition, Siena College; M.L.S., SUNY Albany; incomplete MS in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology, SUNY Albany.

Heather Shalhoub

Librarian and Coordinator for Communication & Resource Development

A little about myself: I had been a librarian at Fulton-Montgomery Community College, Schenectady County Community College and the University at Albany before I came to Empire State College in 2008. I have my M.S.I.S. from the University at Albany with a concentration in libraries, including a focus on humanities and web design. My background includes experience working in a public library children's room, running community art programs for children and senior citizens, and teaching painting for beginners. Recently, I became a certified Creatively Fit Coach, which is life coaching using art and creativity.  I am also very interested in psychology and health topics and love learning new things.  I enjoy helping people learn and become lifelong learners, helping them find the information they need and leaving them with more confidence in their own research skills and abilities. If you need help with any research needs, I am always happy to help and, if you are stuck, I love a challenge.

Liaison responsibilities: science, mathematics and technology; student life and the student leadership institute

Degrees: B.A. in art, SUNY Albany; M.S.I.S., SUNY Albany; incomplete MA in Creative Arts Therapy, Hofstra University.
